Seachem AmGuard™ safely, rapidly and efficiently detoxifies toxic free ammonia in freshwater and marine aquariums. It is especially useful in emergency situations, during tank cycling, after power outages or whenever ammonia levels suddenly spike.

AmGuard™ is one of the strongest liquid ammonia binders on the market. It begins working within minutes and remains effective for up to 72 hours – often twice as long as competing products.

Unlike many traditional ammonia removers, AmGuard™ doesn’t just mask ammonia; it converts toxic free ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is then removed naturally by the aquarium’s biofilter. It is non-acidic and does not alter pH, making it safe for sensitive fish and invertebrates.

How it works

Ammonia in water exists in two forms: free ammonia (NH₃) and ionized ammonia (NH₄⁺). Only the free form is highly toxic to fish. AmGuard™ specifically targets and detoxifies this free ammonia.

Most standard ammonia test kits first raise the pH to 12–14 to convert all ammonia to the free form before measuring it. At this high pH, AmGuard™ cannot function properly, which can lead to false positive readings. For direct monitoring of free ammonia, Seachem recommends using Ammonia Alert® or MultiTest™ Free & Total Ammonia.

For long-term ammonia control and stable water quality, combine AmGuard™ with Seachem Stability® and Seachem Matrix™ to build and support a strong biological filter.

Directions

Basic Use

• Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or as needed to reduce ammonia.

Advanced (with Ammonia Alert®)

• If Ammonia Alert® reads “Alert”:
  • Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 400 L (100 US gallons) daily
• If it reads “Alarm”:
  • Use 1 capful per 200 L (50 US gallons) daily
• If it reads “Toxic”:
  • Use 1 capful per 80 L (20 US gallons) daily

Expert (with MultiTest™ Free & Total Ammonia)

• Use 1 capful (5 mL) per 40 L (10 US gallons) to remove 1 mg/L (ppm) of free ammonia.
